JOB PURPOSE: The Research Services Manager oversees access to the holdings of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives by managing the reading room and overseeing all on-site and remote reference-related operations in support of research, outreach, education, and public programming.

Requirements

  • Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Commitment to special collections and archives research services, including a keen interest in promoting the research use and appreciation of rare and primary source materials.
  • Highly effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to address customer expectations for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Established understanding of the principles of archival and library theory, practice, standards, and proper handling of unique and fragile materials.
  • Strong foundation in intellectual property issues related to archives and special collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, with strong project management skills and the ability to use considerable judgement and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective at meeting deadlines, adjusting priorities, and working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment to planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Advanced subject knowledge of twentieth and twenty-first century world history.
  • Ability to be organized, productive, and effective in a dynamic environment, with the capacity to engage with others to identify challenges and opportunities.
  • Experience directing the work of staff and student assistants, with the ability to productively assemble, engage, and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to analyze, learn, and implement evolving technologies.
  • Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for a working knowledge of one or more non-English languages; particularly Japanese, Chinese, Russian, or Polish, with other additional languages desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Manage reference operations, develop reference procedures, maintain consistent enforcement of reading room rules, security, and proper handling of rare materials.
  • Lead circulation staff, systems, operations, and logistics.
  • Provide research assistance on-site and remotely, problem solving and troubleshooting inquiries.
  • Develop and/or support training of staff and students for reading room related tasks such as staffing the reading room desk and circulation of archival and rare materials.
  • Oversee researcher driven digitization order workflows and staff, permissions to publish, and copyright issues.
  • Supervises registration operations and digital access at the Hoover Institution in the Washington DC Offices
  • Introduces a wide variety of individuals and groups to the holdings of the Library & Archives and its services, on-site and remotely.
  • Engages in the analysis, development, and implementation of systems, tools, technologies, and standards to improve research access, user interfaces, and efficiency of processes.
  • Conduct orientations and tours of the Library & Archives and presentations highlighting collection material for Hoover and Stanford staff, potential donors, and a variety of visitors.
  • Liaise with other Hoover and Stanford departments and faculty to promote the use of the collections, assist with conference and exhibition preparation, assist with classes, and participate in a variety of outreach events.
  • Describe and promote the collection material through social media, blog posts, online research guides, and other platforms.
  • Collect, maintain and analyze statistics, reports, and other metrics on various aspects of operations and services.
  • Contribute to institutional initiatives and special projects.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
