About The Position

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a world-class biomedical research institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is dedicated to improving human health. We are pioneers in the fight against cancer, Parkinson's, and other diseases. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and educators. A Research Scientist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Maulik Patel at the Van Andel Institute (VAI). The Patel Lab studies fundamental aspects of mitochondrial biology using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system, with a focus on mitochondrial DNA regulation and cellular metabolism. We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated scientist to develop an independent research program focused on metabolism in C. elegans. This position is ideal for a candidate who is excited to build and lead a research direction that leverages the unique strengths of the Van Andel Institute, including access to state-of-the-art metabolism and proteomics cores. The successful candidate will design and execute innovative projects aimed at understanding how metabolic pathways intersect with mitochondrial function and genome regulation. They will be expected to drive projects forward independently, contribute to collaborative efforts in the lab, and play a key role in developing new research directions. This role is particularly well-suited for someone who is ready to “hit the ground running,” pursue high-impact scientific questions, and position themselves for future academic independence. The candidate will be encouraged to apply for independent funding and contribute to grant writing efforts in the lab.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring students or junior scientists is preferred.
  • Experience with metabolic assays, metabolomics, or proteomics.
  • Experience integrating genetics with biochemical or systems-level approaches.
