About The Position

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is seeking a Research Fellow / Laboratory Manager (Level B) to join the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, based at the Clayton campus. This research-only academic role combines independent research leadership with hands-on laboratory management and technical expertise . You will design and execute advanced experiments in molecular biology, membrane protein biochemistry and structural biology, while supporting the effective operation and capability of the laboratory. The role plays a critical part in driving high-quality research outputs, mentoring staff and students, and contributing to competitive grant and publication activity.

Requirements

  • A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent research experience
  • A strong track record of refereed research publications
  • Demonstrated expertise in membrane protein biochemistry and cryo-electron microscopy
  • Experience supervising or mentoring research staff and postgraduate students
  • High-level organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing collegially within a multidisciplinary research environment
  • Experience using relevant analytical and computational tools such as cryoSPARC and RELION

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research leading to high-quality publications
  • Design and perform experiments in molecular biology, protein expression and membrane protein biochemistry
  • Apply advanced structural biology approaches, including single particle cryogenic electron microscopy
  • Analyse data and prepare figures, manuscripts and research reports
  • Contribute to the development of grant applications and funding proposals
  • Provide guidance and supervision to research staff and students
  • Support laboratory operations, research planning and administrative functions
  • Participate in departmental, school and faculty research activities and meetings
