About The Position

We are seeking a Research Fellow (Level A, research-only) to join the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), one of Australia’s largest and most dynamic biomedical research environments. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research investigating the structure and molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial and photosynthetic complexes. You will work with advanced structural biology and imaging technologies, including single particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM), cryogenic electron tomography (cryoET), and cryogenic plasma focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), alongside a broad range of biochemical and biophysical techniques. Working under the supervision of a Senior Lecturer, you will be embedded in a collaborative research team and supported to further develop your research skills, contribute to publications and presentations, and build your academic research profile.

Requirements

  • An honours degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related discipline
  • Laboratory experience in biochemistry, molecular, cellular or structural biology
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed laboratory notebooks and well-organised research records
  • Experience or familiarity with organelle isolation, membrane protein purification or functional characterisation
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in structural biology techniques, particularly cryoEM and/or cryoET
  • A proactive, dependable and collaborative approach to research

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality research as part of a collaborative research team
  • Perform experimental work including cell culture, organelle isolation, membrane protein purification and reconstitution
  • Apply biochemical, enzymatic, biophysical, structural and spectroscopic techniques
  • Operate advanced laboratory and imaging equipment, including cryoEM-related technologies
  • Contribute to data analysis, figure preparation and scientific writing for publications and grant applications
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, data archiving and reagent documentation
  • Participate in research meetings, seminars and professional activities
  • Contribute to research-related administrative tasks and limited teaching-related material as required
