About The Position

The Research Development Specialist leads the development and implementation of research strategies designed to grow and diversify The Ohio State University’s externally sponsored research portfolio, with an emphasis on growing federally-sponsored, large-scale, interdisciplinary research grants and contracts. Reporting to the Director of the Research Development Office, the Research Development Specialist manages an interdisciplinary topical portfolio that spans multiple academic units, centers and institutes. Working with Associate Deans for Research, Center and Institute Directors, faculty researchers, and other University leaders, the Research Development Specialist identifies target areas of strength and emerging opportunity within the portfolio that align with University, State, and Federal priorities and crafts and implements strategies to pursue associated leadership level and/or highly strategic, funding opportunities or to create new funding partnerships. Research Development Specialists serve as thought partners for strategic research investments and initiatives to campus research leaders and provide strategic guidance to proposal teams. They create knowledge sharing and networking opportunities for campus researchers and the federal funding community and work collaboratively with unit and center personnel, corporate and foundation relations, and other research and academic initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of federal agency R&D grant and contract mechanisms and proposal requirements, as well as familiarity with research funding search engines. Additionally, candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, have competence with the Microsoft Office suite of software tools, and have a working knowledge and experience with project management tools, teaming platforms, and virtual meeting tools. Successful candidates will be intellectually curious, self-motivated, and able to exercise considerable independent judgement with limited supervision. In addition, successful candidates will have proven ability to manage stressful situations that arise while managing multiple priorities under deadline pressure and be able to effectively interact with and guide diverse teams comprised of faculty, students, and staff from multiple technical and academic areas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Six years of experience in positions requiring grant writing/editing, sponsored program proposal assistance, sponsored program administration (pre- or post- award), and/or sponsored program management.
  • Knowledge of Federal Agency Research and Development (R&D) grant and contract mechanisms and proposal requirements.
  • Familiarity with research funding search engines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office suite of software tools (e.g. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Working knowledge and experience with project management tools, teaming platforms (e.g. Microsoft Teams), and virtual meeting tools.
