About The Position

This Research Assistant position is available only to enrolled American University students. Research Assistants will assist with the hand-coding of city council agenda items using a codebook adapted from the policy agendas project. This will involve brief training on how to use the codebook to code short snippets of text from city council meeting records for both their substantive topic and their process type. Following the training, research assistants will work through a sample of agenda items identifying their appropriate codes. Most student positions at American University are eligible to use Federal Work Study (FWS) awards.

Requirements

  • Must be working towards a PhD
  • Prior research experience
  • Interest in local government or public policy
  • Comfort with Excel
  • Must be an enrolled American University student

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with a codebook
  • Preference for students with a Federal Work Study award

Responsibilities

  • Hand-coding short snippets of text using a codebook
  • Resolving disagreements over topics with the supervisor and other Research Assistant
