About The Position

The New York Times is looking for an experienced and versatile journalist to join the National desk as a religion correspondent. You will bring a sophisticated and curious approach to the intersections of religion, politics, culture and identity with a particular emphasis on Jewish life in America. You will also bring an eagerness to experiment with new story forms and a passion for bringing Times journalism to a global audience across digital, print and other media. You will join a team of reporters and editors who handle religion coverage for The Times – a team that is growing to include correspondents focused on both American Judaism, and on the Muslim experience in America. You'll complement our two current religion reporters, who write expansively about faith and values in America, including topics such as the rise of a new political Christianity, the politics of abortion and technology's impact on spirituality. You must be as comfortable covering immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events and issues. And above all, you must be collaborative and eager to work with, and learn from, Times colleagues across various desks in the newsroom. This is an in-office position, based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of reporting and writing experience
  • Demonstrated experience juggling breaking news, smart analysis and ambitious enterprise
  • Detailed and expert understanding of Judaism and clarity about the intricacies of its place in America
  • Experience in a deadline-oriented environment

Nice To Haves

  • Reporting and writing experience for a global news organization
  • Collegial and collaborative behavior, integrity with assignments
  • Interest in directly engaging with readers to deepen their relationships with The Times
  • Commitment to The New York Times's strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues

Responsibilities

  • You are the authority on your beat, driving the coverage, developing an array of sources, delivering scoops and pitching the important stories and developments that define the coverage
  • You will cover live and breaking news, enterprise, and investigations
  • You will demonstrate a sharp eye for original story ideas, including specific targets or broad themes
  • You will write on deadline, receiving feedback and edits
  • You will demonstrate familiarity with audience tactics to reach new readers across platforms
  • You will collaborate with other reporters
  • You will work with colleagues across Photo, Video, Audio, and other departments to bring stories to life in a variety of formats across all NYT products
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
