The Registered Nurse (RN) for the Preop/PACU area cares for patients having or having had surgery, endoscopy, pain management, pediatrics, and cardiac cath recoveries. The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering nursing care to the Patient in the C.V. Laboratory. The R.N. administers medications, observes for complication and intervenes when emergencies occur. The R.N. will scrub to assist the Physician during all procedures (except PTCA) and will run the Code 300. This document defines major job responsibilities and performance expectations and serves as a tool for evaluation performance, but is not intended to be all inclusive as other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Kentucky.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • A minimum of two years of Cardiovascular Laboratory experience or two years of critical care experience.
  • Strong customer service skills- able to demonstrate patience and understanding, ensure customer satisfaction, and resolve customer complaints.
  • Superior organization skills- manages time effectively, keeps tasks appropriately prioritized, able to pay extreme attention to detail for long periods of time.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills- responsive, informs constituents of process, pleasant to work with, educates and provides timely, accurate information; can build effective, strong working relationships others through trust, communication, and credibility.
  • Skilled at remaining calm during periods of stress.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines, and organizational policies.
  • Able to critically think through complex situations, process improvements, and evidence-based practice.
  • Able to assist others in developing good reasoning skills.
  • Able to work independently and within a team setting.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care to the Patient in the C.V. Laboratory.
  • Administer medications, observe for complication and intervene when emergencies occur.
  • Scrub to assist the Physician during all procedures (except PTCA) and run the Code 300.
  • Demonstrate accurate utilization of the new CERNER platform (E.H.R.).
  • Regularly check email for corporate and department communications.
  • Display knowledge and comply with the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Implement an age-appropriate plan of care in conjunction with the health care team per Scope of Service.
  • Attend all UofL Health required educational programs as well as all Learn (KNOW) Modules.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of drug therapy and document according to best practice, including administering medications and IV fluids, referencing unfamiliar drugs, checking patency of IV sites, completing nursing chart forms, and checking narcotics according to policy.
  • Supervise nursing care of the patient in the cardiovascular laboratory, including general preparation before procedure, continually anticipating patient’s needs, observing and assessing patient for complications, exercising good judgment in decision making, notifying physician, and implementing patient care.
  • Supervise nursing care of the patient post cardiovascular laboratory procedure, including close observation of catheter entry site, assessment of vital signs, pulses, and providing post cath instructions.
  • Act as a liaison with patient’s family, communicate with families during or after procedure as necessary, and provide emotional support.
  • Provide nursing care of patient post catheterization/P.T.C.A. when hospital bed is not available; transport patient to hospital bed and give report providing continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Cardiac Catheterization procedures and equipment, including scrubbing to assist the Cardiologist, operating the injector, operating imaging equipment, and being familiar with different catheter wires and balloons.
  • Complete the log book accurately and completely.
  • Contribute to the productivity and cost effectiveness of the department operation by maintaining stock supplies, charging for items used, maintaining professional demeanor, performing duties in an organized and efficient workflow, and demonstrating flexibility in work schedule and duties.
  • Participate in the mandatory call schedule and complete scheduled cases prior to the end of the work-day as required by the Cardiovascular Laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee.
  • Assist in delivering high quality health care services in a professional, compassionate, and courteous manner while respecting the dignity and individuality of each person.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times according to established procedures.
  • Follow the Standard of Performance.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously, answering assigned telephone lines within three rings and identifying self at all times.
  • Assist visitors and patients in giving directions and information.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with all visitors, physicians, patients and employees.
  • Introduce self and position to patient, families and visitors at all times.
  • Assess environment for safety hazards which could harm patients, visitors, or other hospital employees, and report hazards to appropriate supervisors.
  • Collaborate with other departments and outside agencies to meet the identified needs of the patients and the organization.
  • Responsible for RT/RN/CVT student and JH new employee instruction as it relates to JH policies and procedures and Cath Lab orientation processes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Sheath removal and maintain hemostasis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
