About The Position

This Registered Nurse position provides comprehensive perioperative care within a Maxillofacial Surgery Office. The role encompasses preoperative duties such as patient preparation, assessment, IV insertion, and anesthesia preparation; intraoperative duties including surgical assistance, anesthesia support, and real-time monitoring and documentation; and postoperative responsibilities like patient recovery, discharge readiness assessment, and patient education. The nurse is also responsible for interdisciplinary communication, patient care coordination, supply management, and strict adherence to regulatory compliance and safety standards, including OSHA and HIPAA. Flexibility to travel between practice locations and assist in other surgical department areas is also required.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (or must obtain within one month of hire).
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia techniques, and perioperative care.
  • Ability to recognize and manage surgical complications and emergencies.
  • Proficient in IV insertion, medication administration, wound care, and anesthesia support.
  • Experience in using medical equipment such as monitors, pumps, and ventilators.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and provide clear instructions to patients and families.
  • Ability to assess and address patient needs, manage patient care effectively, and provide emotional support to patients and families during the surgical process.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to accurately document patient information and follow complex medical procedures in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to assess patient conditions, identify complications, and respond swiftly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a busy operating room environment while ensuring patient safety and quality of care.
  • Collaborates effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing patient needs and surgical situations while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preferably in a surgical or perioperative nursing role.
  • Experience in anesthesia or critical care settings.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications preferred or required depending on department needs.
  • Certifications in Perioperative Nursing (such as CNOR) are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients, escort them to the exam or procedure rooms, and ensure all preoperative documentation is complete, including surgical verification, patient history, and consent forms.
  • Take and record vital signs, weight, chief complaint, and other relevant patient information using age-appropriate techniques.
  • Accurately transcribe results into the patient’s medical chart.
  • Initiate IV access for medication administration, hydration, and other therapeutic interventions as required by the surgical plan.
  • Prepare anesthetic medications as ordered, draw them up, and assist with the administration of anesthesia drugs under the supervision of the anesthesiologist.
  • Maintain accurate records of medication administration.
  • Ensure that the surgery chart is complete and accurate, reviewing orders, allergies, and lab results to confirm readiness for surgery.
  • Assist the surgical team by maintaining a sterile environment and supporting the surgical team in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Monitor the patient during surgery, assist with anesthetic drug administration, and accurately maintain anesthetic records.
  • Work closely with the surgeon to ensure the patient’s safety and comfort during the procedure.
  • Monitor patient vitals during surgery and document anesthetic and surgical information, including any changes in patient status, in real-time.
  • Maintain a complete and accurate record of all medications, interventions, and observations during the procedure.
  • Provide postoperative care during the patient recovery post-operatively.
  • Assess and monitor patients’ vitals as they emerge from sedation and address any complications or concerns promptly.
  • Assess the patient’s readiness for discharge based on criteria such as pain management, vital sign stability, and the absence of complications.
  • Approve patient discharge under the guidance of the licensed professional.
  • Educate patients and families on post-operative care instructions, including wound care, pain management, and signs of complications.
  • Ensure the patient has a clear understanding of their care instructions before discharge.
  • Monitor and replenish medical supplies and medications in surgical and recovery areas.
  • Ensure that expired medications and supplies are disposed of in accordance with safety standards.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact between the patient and the surgeon.
  • Ensure seamless communication and coordination of care before, during, and after surgery.
  • Ensure that patients receive appropriate care throughout their surgical experience.
  • Address patient concerns and coordinate with the healthcare team to ensure all patient needs are met.
  • Be flexible and available to travel between different practice locations as needed.
  • Assist in other areas of the surgical department as required.
  • Adhere to all safety, regulatory, and quality standards, including OSHA, HIPAA, and hospital protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all relevant laws and policies regarding patient care.
  • Follow infection control protocols, perform regular safety checks, and ensure a safe and clean environment for both patients and staff.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards.
