About The Position

The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a Staffing Supervisor. The Staffing Supervisor plays an essential role in ensuring the hospital is safely and effectively staffed across all units and shifts. This position supports the nursing department by maintaining accurate schedules, approving time for nurses and mental health workers, and managing staffing adjustments due to leaves or sick calls. With a strong focus on organization and collaboration, the Staffing Supervisor helps create a balanced workflow that supports both patient care and team efficiency. In addition to coordinating staffing needs, the Staffing Supervisor oversees office clerks to ensure accurate tracking of overtime and compliance with scheduling policies. This role also contributes to the hospital’s commitment to patient safety and care quality by responding to emergency codes and providing hands-on or supportive nursing care when needed. It is an opportunity to blend leadership, operational oversight, and clinical expertise in a way that makes a meaningful impact every day. Please Note: This is a full-time, 40-hour position. The selected candidate will work on second shift from 2\:45 PM to 11\:15 PM with Week 1\: Tuesday/Saturday & Week 2\: Sunday/Friday as days off. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • Substitutions: I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and procedures, including human anatomy, physiology, and growth and development across the lifespan.
  • Strong understanding of nursing terminology, documentation standards, and the use of charts, graphs, and tables for accurate recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Skilled in providing care to individuals with mental, physical, and emotional challenges, including those requiring specialized custodial or rehabilitative care.
  • Proficient in emergency medical procedures such as CPR and the use of monitoring and diagnostic equipment, including telemetry and electrocardiogram units.
  • Knowledgeable in infection control, sanitation, and sterilization practices, as well as proper techniques for collecting and transporting laboratory specimens.
  • Familiarity with pharmacology and the administration of medications used to diagnose, treat, and manage physical and mental health conditions.
  • Ability to interpret physicians’ orders, treatment plans, and regulatory guidelines while applying sound clinical judgment in decision-making and patient care.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to provide clear written and verbal instructions, prepare accurate reports, and maintain confidentiality in all patient interactions.
  • Adept at problem-solving, teamwork, and maintaining professionalism in stressful or emergency situations while fostering positive relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Flexible and dependable, with a willingness to work varied shifts, including weekends, holidays, and nights, to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for staffing-related inquiries, responding promptly to phone calls, emails, and in-person requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assess and coordinate hospital staffing needs based on acuity, training, patient status, and operational priorities in consultation with management.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly schedules for nursing and support staff, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBA) and hospital policies.
  • Approve and process time-off requests, monitor attendance and sick leave trends, and ensure continuous hospital-wide coverage.
  • Supervise clerical staff in maintaining accurate staffing records, responding to last-minute scheduling changes, and managing overtime tracking and reporting.
  • Maintain adequate professional and paraprofessional coverage to ensure safe and effective patient care, adjusting assignments as needed based on patient acuity and census.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, providing direction, evaluation, and documentation, while ensuring nursing staff readiness and compliance with hospital protocols.
  • Support nursing leadership by promoting effective communication, problem solving, and performance improvement initiatives that enhance staff engagement and patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to staff education and development through training, orientation, and coaching, serving as a resource and role model for nursing personnel.
  • Deliver direct or indirect nursing care as needed and perform additional responsibilities to support patient safety, quality care, and operational excellence.
