The Registered Nurse Hematology and Oncology delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses, plans, implements, and documents the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the Registered Nurse are carried out according to the New Jersey/Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act (based on location), hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing.

Requirements

  • Current RN license in the State of New Jersey or Pennsylvania, based on work location.
  • Required within 6 months of employment to take the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course with successful completion of post-test.
  • Oncology experience required.
  • Current CPR required.
  • It is required within 6 months of employment to take the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Course with successful completion of post-test.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in ambulatory oncology nursing helpful.
  • Oncology Nurse certification (OCN) is preferred be obtained after the second year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Works in conjunction with the Medical Oncologist to provide the highest level of care to the patients.
  • Acts as a scribe for chemotherapy orders and has proficient knowledge of chemotherapy protocols.
  • Communicates with infusion center as necessary per patient’s treatment regimen.
  • Enters retrospective orders into EMR per protocol for medications, imaging and procedures.
  • Provides treatment education to patients and their families and answers questions regarding diagnosis and treatment.
  • Serves as a consistent contact for the patient/family throughout the process of diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assists in coordination of care to other providers within the network.
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions.
  • Prioritize phone calls and coordinate care accordingly.
  • Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and facilities regarding planned services.
