The Emergency Department Observation unit at St. Anthony Hospital, a Magnet® designated hospital, is a 16-bed department with a volume of more than 300 patients a month. It admits patients from the ED needing further observation, testing, or monitoring who are not appropriate to stay in the ED. The top two diagnoses are chest pain and abdominal pain. The unit also accepts patients from surrounding free-standing EDs with the same criteria and may take overflow from other departments. If a patient requires more care than can be provided within 24-48 hours, they are transferred to an inpatient unit. The department's mission is to deliver safe, quality care to every patient in a timely manner. This department is an excellent place to solidify med/surg skills, develop excellent time management, and gain experience with emergency room patients. Nurses work alongside a mid-level provider (PA or NP) with every patient. It is a close-knit team that offers opportunities to learn about many different disease processes and supports team members in achieving their nursing goals, education, or certification for desired ED positions. This is a very fast-paced department with admissions and discharges on every shift, requiring adaptable and hard-working nurses.
