The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Requirements

  • A current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Will complete four to eight weeks of on the job training.
  • Must submit to background security check.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services' Pre-service Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Under limited supervision of a Nursing Director/Associate or Nurse Supervisor, provides professional nursing care for ill, injured, or disabled inmates.
  • Provides clinical direction and guidance to Licensed Practical Nurses and direct care staff, provides direct patient nursing care and treatment within the scope of licensure in a correctional setting.
  • Performs patient care in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Administer medications, transcribe and carry out doctor's orders, assess patients utilizing protocols, triage.
  • Assist in moving patients.
