About The Position

The work we do matters! The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Under limited supervision of a Nursing Director/Associate or Nurse Supervisor, provides nursing care to incarcerated individuals with behavioral health conditions, including but not limited to mental health disorders and substance abuse issues. The role involves performing assessments, developing care plans, administering medications, and offering crisis intervention while maintaining safety and security within the facility. Requirements

  • A current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Will complete four to eight weeks of on the job training.
  • Must submit to background security check.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services' Pre-service Training Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in assigning, reviewing, leading, or supervising the work of others.
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years of experience as a registered nurse, preferably with a background in psychiatric or behavioral health nursing.
  • Experience in a correctional or secure healthcare environment is highly preferred.
