POSITION SUMMARY Marathon Petroleum’s Catlettsburg, KY Refinery is seeking an Area Inspector to serve as the primary point of contact for fixed equipment integrity issues, including pressure vessels and piping circuits. This role ensures all fixed equipment complies with state regulations, refining standards, and company specifications. The Area Inspector will identify, communicate, and collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to mitigate mechanical integrity risks. The available schedule for the position is a 4-10 schedule onsite - 6 AM - 4:30 PM - Monday - Thursday, on-call coverage occurs once every 8 weeks and support of TAR and unplanned outages up to 3 times a year.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required and completed API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspection) and API 570 (Piping Inspection) certifications.
  • Two (2) years or more of inspection experience in fixed equipment, reliability, and maintenance required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must be familiar with Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) methodologies in accordance with API 580 and 581.
  • Must have good facilitation and leadership skills for conducting meetings.
  • Must have effective communication and coordination skills across multiple organizational levels, including operations, maintenance, and engineering.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Travel Requirement is 5%.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and/or knowledge of API 653, API 571, API 580, API 581, and NBIC standards.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of ASNT Level II methods, including UTT, RTFI, MT, and PT.
  • Proven experience in turnaround planning and execution for inspection activities.
  • Familiarity with inspection software such as Meridium, APM, or PCMS.
  • Experience maintaining fixed equipment in accordance with Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes inspection plans/life cycle management for refining equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, temporary repairs and equipment replacements, Turnaround (TAR) dates, and inspection history.
  • Prioritizes and plans work within the respective assigned area team.
  • Conducts thorough, hands-on field inspections, to evaluate the condition of area equipment.
  • Documents inspection records, findings, and recommendations in Marathon’s Inspection Data Management System (IDMS).
  • Completes all required documentation and interprets and applies industry and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) codes and specifications.
  • Develops, revises, and maintains comprehensive inspection procedures, applicable guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Reviews and applies Management of Change (MOC) requirements and ensures all Process Safety Management (PSM) elements are implemented.
  • Generates inspection requirements for projects within assigned units or areas and coordinates inspection requirements for larger-scale projects in collaboration with Operations, Engineering and Maintenance, and Reliability departments.
  • Coordinates services of contract inspectors/non-destructive examination technicians.
  • Understands critical process variables that affect equipment reliability, identifies gaps, and leads gap closure effort.
  • Generates and provides repair/upgrade/modification recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments in conjunction with management, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Provides oversight for and facilitates quality assurance program by auditing site’s work in areas such as, but not limited to: DOT covered equipment, non-destructive examination (NDE), visual inspection, data lifecycle analysis of IDMS output, PMI, welding procedures, heat treatment, QA/QC required for projects, and equipment replacement.
  • May lead and drive continuous improvement in inspection-related programs as assigned.
