About The Position

The Recreation Sports Coordinator is a central leadership position within Campus Recreation, serving as a primary driver of daily operations, student development, and program delivery for both Intramural Sports and the Collins Fitness Center. This role provides direct supervision, mentorship, and professional oversight for student employees and the Collins Fitness Center Graduate Assistant, playing a critical role in staff development, operational continuity, and program success. The position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing intramural sports leagues and tournaments; supervising, training, and evaluating student employees and assisting with the Graduate Assistant; and supporting front-facing member services within the Collins Fitness Center. As a key on-site professional, the Recreation Sports Coordinator ensures safe facility operations, consistent customer service, adherence to departmental policies, and effective response to incidents and operational needs. This role carries significant responsibility for maintaining program quality, supporting the educational mission of Campus Recreation, and ensuring the facility remains operational during designated hours, including periods when other professional staff are not present.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, or a related field.
  • One year of experience facilitating intramural sports in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Two years of experience officiating a variety of intramural or recreational sports.
  • Knowledge of rules and policies governing a variety of sports.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and motivate student employees.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary administrator for the Intramural Sports program, including leagues, tournaments, and special events.
  • Develop seasonal schedules, manage registrations, and communicate regularly with team captains and participants.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise intramural officials and student supervisors.
  • Submit and maintain daily reports including scores, incidents, accidents, and sportsmanship ratings.
  • Maintain intramural equipment and ensure facilities are properly prepared for programs.
  • Promote intramural sports and recreation programs to the campus community.
  • Independently operate the Collins Fitness Center during designated hours in the absence of other professional staff.
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for facility operations, responding to emergencies, incidents, and operational concerns.
  • Review daily shift reports and audit facility usage, including member check-ins and program participation.
  • Monitor facility cleanliness, safety, and equipment condition and report maintenance concerns.
  • Serve as the primary supervisor for the Collins Fitness Center student employees, providing direct oversight, mentoring, and ongoing professional development.
  • Establish goals, assign responsibilities, and evaluate performance of the Graduate Assistant in alignment with departmental objectives and academic learning outcomes.
  • Delegate operational and programmatic responsibilities to the Graduate Assistant, particularly related to intramural sports administration, student staff supervision, and facility operations.
  • Provide regular coaching, feedback, and assessment to support the Graduate Assistant’s growth in leadership, management, and professional competencies.
  • Collaborate with the Graduate Assistant to ensure continuity of operations, effective coverage, and adherence to Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate student employees supporting intramural sports, fitness, and member services.
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations for student staff.
  • Ensure student employees follow departmental policies and provide excellent customer service.
  • Oversee recognition initiatives celebrating student staff achievements and milestones.
  • Provide front-facing customer service to members, guests, and visitors.
  • Respond to inquiries, resolve concerns, and support a welcoming environment.
  • Facilitate member check-ins and assist with membership-related processes as needed.
  • Assist with leading and coordinate American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification classes, including scheduling, recordkeeping, and compliance.
  • Review incident reports and escalate issues to appropriate professional staff as needed.
  • Maintain required certifications, including climbing wall instructor certification.
  • Assist with payroll processing, financial tracking, and reporting related to recreation programs.
  • Support scheduling and coordination of fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Maintain inventories of recreation equipment and supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission and operation of Campus Recreation.
