About The Position

The Outdoor Recreation Specialist, under the supervision of the Recreation Programs Supervisor, coordinates daily recreation activities for citizens, community groups, youth groups, sports teams, and other individuals and groups. This role involves providing program and event management, customer service, and general facility supervision for outdoor recreation programs and facilities. Additionally, the specialist assists in ensuring the safety and cleanliness of outdoor recreational facilities, develops new recreation programs, acquires sponsorships, and participates in community meetings and organizational planning. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with an emphasis in recreation management or an associated field; and minimum one year’s experience working in recreation programs and activities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide program and event management for outdoor recreation activities.
  • Develop new recreation programs, activities, equipment, and materials.
  • Adapt city-sponsored recreation programs to meet diverse community needs.
  • Establish programs tailored to individuals, groups, and community agencies.
  • Coordinate and promote city-sponsored recreation programs to the public.
  • Notify patrons of activity schedules and registration requirements.
  • Acquire sponsorships, donations, and in-kind services for recreation programs.
  • Ensure the safety and cleanliness of outdoor recreational facilities.
  • Monitor spectators and participants at sports events to enforce rules.
  • Patrol facilities to detect and report any damage or safety concerns.
  • Make reservations for the use of facilities by individuals or groups.
  • Order, inventory, receive, store, and issue sports equipment and supplies.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patrons and the public.
  • Distribute department marketing materials to promote programs.
  • Notify patrons of activity schedules and registration requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of reports.
  • Handle routine personnel-related questions from employees.
  • Maintain accurate records, indexes, and logs for departmental activities.
  • Operate department base radio and communicate with department employees.
  • Perform various administrative support work for special projects.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, training, and evaluating recreation workers.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Address complaints and resolve problems within the team.
  • Advise on expenditures and budget control matters.
  • Order supplies and materials for the department.
  • Monitor expenses and revenues generated by programs.
  • Make recommendations for capital improvements and equipment.
