About The Position

RECREATION LEADER II Hourly (Part-Time; Non-Benefited)- Up to 28 hours/week Open/Competitive The City of Pico Rivera strives to support and enhance a high quality of life for the residents, businesses and visitors by providing well planned, environmentally sensitive, cost-effective infrastructure and services to promote public health, personal safety and transportation. The Department The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks and Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course. The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages. The Position This position will assist recreation supervisory and management staff with performing all phases of recreation programming, including oversight of the day-to-day facility/field reservations to provide positive participant experiences. The ideal candidate(s) will be flexible to assist in all department program areas, will be skilled in establishing, maintaining and fostering positive working relationships with participants, peers, the public, and other City staff. Note: This recruitment will be utilized to establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill other current or future vacancies in this classification. This position will be assigned to work at the Parks & Recreation Department main office. The schedule for this position will be any combination of days between Monday through Thursday, beginning at 6:30 AM - 6:30 PM (schedule may change based on the needs of the department). This position may also be required to work non-traditional shift/hours including Friday through Sunday, nights, early mornings, holidays, special events and various evening and weekend dates.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Availability to work varied shifts including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. of weight.
  • Ability to understand community values, traditions, hierarchy structures and roles.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and enforce safety rules.
  • Ability to handle challenging customer service situations.
  • Display strong and professional customer service skills.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Applicant must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent. Course work in college desired.
  • Applicant must have a minimum of one (1) year of recreation experience working with the public; leadership experience is desired.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License throughout the course of employment. City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program.
  • Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement based on the IRS issued rates).
  • Within 30 days of hire, candidates must possess and maintain certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Community First Aid and Safety from a nationally accredited organization, such as the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Red Cross (ARC) and the Health and Safety Institute (HSI). (Online certifications will be accepted; skills test / hands-on training must be completed after online portion).

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, promote and conduct recreation programs and activities.
  • Provide exceptional customer service; answers and returns phone calls; performs a variety of clerical duties to include typing, filing, and preparing various documents.
  • Prepare signs and flyers for recreation events and programs.
  • Assist in the supervision of recreation facilities and their use.
  • Assist in planning and directing youth arts and crafts programs.
  • Assist in forming and coaching boys' and girls' sports teams.
  • Display and promote good customer service skills with co-workers, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Enforce departmental policies governing public safety and quality service.
  • Knowledge of personal computer, calculator and other office machines necessary to carry out assigned duties (including Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Employees in this position are regularly scheduled to work up to 28 hours per week and are not eligible for inclusion in the regular, permanent employment service of the City and do not receive medical benefits.
  • Hourly employees will be enrolled in the Nationwide 401(a) Plan.
  • The City agrees to designate up to 6 paid holidays for represented part-time hourly workers with some exceptions, per memorandum of understanding.
  • Sick Leave - 40 hours under the California Paid Sick Leave Law for employees working for at least 30 days within a year and satisfying a 90-day employment period.
  • Leave Time - Entitled to accrue leave time beginning on first day of work.
  • Credit Union membership is available.
