About The Position

The Greater Vallejo Recreation District invites applications for: Position: Recreation Leader 1 Department: Recreation Job Opening Date: November 26, 2025 Location: Children's Wonderland Deadline for applying: December 17, 2025 Position Type: Part Time Salary Range: $16.50 - $17.00 The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over sixty years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land. GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2025-2026 fiscal year budget of $12.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million. The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities. RECREATION LEADER 1 Class Specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. DEFINITION To maintain a safe and enjoyable recreation program for children ages 5-11; to lead in recreation activities; and to perform a variety of tasks in support of an after school or summer program. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general recreation principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of age appropriate recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of basic art and craft techniques, games, and sports.
  • Ability to learn recreation activities, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to respond to requests and inquires from the general public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively under the supervision of the Senior Recreation Leader.
  • Ability to attend meetings and trainings related to work.
  • C.P.R. and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of hire date.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age to apply.
  • Proof of legal right to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience with youth recreation programs or childcare settings is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and supervise various recreational activities, including sports, crafts, games, and field trips.
  • May collect monthly fees; issue receipts; maintain record of enrollment and fees paid.
  • Lead recreational activities; supervise children; enforce safety rules and guidelines.
  • Resolve conflicts among children.
  • Monitor activities within a facility and/or outside; provide information to the public on program activities.
  • Respond to parent, school or community concerns and issues; direct to higher level staff, as necessary.
  • Perform first aid as necessary.
  • Assist in the general cleaning and upkeep of facilities.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
