About The Position

The position involves planning and implementing recreational programs, classes, and special events in a manner that addresses the recreational needs of county residents. Work involves assisting in planning, directing, and coordinating a county-wide recreation program including a wide variety of programs, classes, and events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Park Management, Recreation and Tourism or related field, from an accredited university.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in the field of parks and recreation; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possess CPR and AED Certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possess a First Aid Certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess a valid State Driver's License.
  • Possess a NAYS Clinician Certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public recreation and of its philosophy and objectives.
  • Knowledge of the policies, programs, and procedures of the parks and recreation operations.
  • Knowledge of the methods involved in organizing and conducting continuous recreation programs and specialized activities.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of management and administration.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic recreation.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and procurement procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate recreational programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other recreation staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine an applicable solution to address such problems.
  • Ability to write comprehensive and detailed reports.
  • Ability to train all recreational staff, contractual instructors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to make public presentations and project a positive image of the County.
  • Ability to evaluate qualifications of individuals who apply for recreational staff position and make recommendation to the Director for hire.
  • Ability to evaluate performance of recreational staff.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates the recreation programs sponsored by the County.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a wide variety of programs and events using County facilities and other publicly owned (rented) facilities as necessary.
  • Evaluates recreation programs and events, making recommendations to improve content, encourage participation and eliminate underperforming programs.
  • Makes reservations and rents facilities as needed for various recreation events and activities.
  • Holds training sessions on recreation programs, techniques, and policies and procedures for recreational staff.
  • Conducts public presentations concerning the various recreation programs and events to clubs and civic groups.
  • Creates promotional brochures and other materials concerning special events and continuous recreation programs.
  • Prepares proposals for new special events, recreation programs, and solicitation of corporate sponsors.
  • Prepares correspondence to various governmental agencies, private firms, media, or individuals relating to special events and recreation programs.
  • Proposes a budget for the recreation division and submit to the Director as requested.
  • Manages the approved yearly budget, including recreation supplies, facility rentals, and any recreational contractual payouts.
  • Evaluates programs to determine their effectiveness and adjust as necessary.
  • Updates the Department's web pages and serves as primary promoter of programs offered and handles and interacts with media contacts as appropriate including the various social media platforms.
  • Directs, schedules, and supervises full-time, part-time, and seasonal recreational program staff and contract staff, including sports officials, instructors, and camp directors.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations on subordinates with validation and approval by the Director.
  • Recruits and trains all volunteers, including event volunteers and coaches.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
