About The Position

El Puente seeks a dedicated and socially conscious Receptionist to join our Cornerstone Team. The position will utilize El Puente’s model for youth leadership and community development to nurture the next generation of leaders. Who we are: Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice. Its mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self-determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model, as a high-impact youth and community development organization. As a staff member of El Puente, the Receptionist is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy, and principles of the organization. El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, and beyond, El Puente is at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates social policy locally and nationally. Position Overview: We are seeking a reliable, organized, and friendly Front Desk Receptionist to be the welcoming face of our Cornerstone After School Program. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing daily front desk operations, including greeting families and visitors, handling phone inquiries, maintaining accurate attendance records, and supporting program staff with administrative tasks. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to creating a safe and positive environment for youth and families are essential. The receptionist plays a key role in ensuring smooth daily operations and representing the program professionally and courteously.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Prior experience in customer service, clerical work, or front desk operations preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email)
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to youth development and respect for community diversity
  • Must be able to perform light physical labor (e.g., lifting 25 lbs, setting up event spaces).
  • Must pass background check and fingerprinting per DYCD or other relevant agency requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (e.g., English/Spanish) a plus

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist children, parents, staff, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner
  • Monitor and manage the front entrance to ensure safety and security protocols are followed
  • Handle incoming phone calls and direct them appropriately
  • Maintain daily attendance logs and sign-in/sign-out sheets for youth and staff
  • Distribute and collect forms, flyers, and other communication materials
  • Provide general information about the program to parents, caregivers, and visitors
  • Assist with filing, copying, and other administrative duties as assigned
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming front desk and lobby area
  • Report any concerns regarding youth behavior or safety to site leadership
  • Support program staff with clerical tasks and occasional event preparation
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant and staff information at all times
