About The Position

Hicks Nurseries, the premier retail and wholesale garden center on Long Island, is looking for a Team Leader, in our Receiving Department to join our team. With a proud legacy in the industry, Hicks offers a fast-paced, friendly environment where customers and team members alike love to grow. Objective: Supervise and work alongside a dynamic team in our Processing Center. This hands-on role is responsible for efficiently and accurately receiving, warehousing, and preparing inventory for our merchandising team. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with exceptional organizational skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to maintain high standards for quality, safety, and efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years in a similar inventory, warehouse, or logistics role.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to train others and delegate tasks confidently.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Certified or able to become certified to operate forklifts and skid steers. (We will train on Hicks equipment)

  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Interest in horticulture or gardening knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the Receiving Manager regarding scheduled deliveries.
  • Oversee the receiving of shipments, ensuring merchandise meets quality standards.
  • Operate forklifts and skid steers safely to unload deliveries.
  • Accurately verify incoming products using handheld scanners and track movement in our Merchandise Management System.
  • Resolve discrepancies and collaborate with buyers and Accounts Payable as needed.
  • Deploy team members effectively for maximum productivity.
  • Supervise daily team activities, ensuring timely and accurate task completion.
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams regarding incoming inventory.
  • Prepare merchandise for floor display (shelving, pricing, sorting, etc.).
  • Stage and warehouse inventory according to established layouts and plans.
  • Track inventory flow and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Keep warehouse and receiving areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Remove debris and maintain cleanliness standards.
  • Provide friendly, helpful assistance to customers and internal staff.
  • Participate in product knowledge and other training programs.
  • Suggest and support improvements in processes and efficiencies.
  • Participate in regular cycle counts and the annual full physical inventory.
  • Assist with projects or other departments as needed.
