About The Position

The Arapaho Roosevelt and Pawnee National Grasslands are seeking to hire two Rangeland Technicians. The crew will primarily be focused on surveys relating to rangeland and invasive plant management on the Pawnee National Grassland. Technicians will be working under the guidance of the Range, Weeds and Botany Program Manager and the Pawnee District Ranger. Technicians will have a clear list of duties, but the crew will often independently work in the field, requiring the ability to follow safety directions and protocols while remaining efficient and on task. Work will include range improvement inventory and inspections, allotment inspections, conducting vegetation monitoring in grazing allotments, invasive weed treatment with herbicides, and Prairie Dog management. This crew will focus on supporting the livestock grazing program on the Grasslands, however there is a potential to help other resource crews depending upon interest and opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be comfortable and be able to work safely with herbicides and spray equipment (Note: Herbicides used are approved by the Forest Service and are ranked with the Cautionary or Warning label, the Forest Service rarely uses any herbicides with the Danger label rating)
  • Must be able to complete strenuous field work, carry heavy loads over rugged terrain and work in hot, dry conditions or inclement weather
  • Some experience in Rocky Mountain native and invasive plant communities and general ecology is beneficial
  • Must be able to drive 4x4 trucks on forest roads, work in burned areas, and carry out duties in steep and rugged terrain and wilderness areas
  • Must be able to work with other people on a crew and under the direction of USFS staff

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Ecology, Invasive Species Management, Rangeland Management or related fields
  • Colorado or another state Pesticide License
  • Knowledge of rangeland management infrastructure and basic maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of how to calibrate spray equipment and calculate herbicide rates
  • Experience with conducting rangeland and vegetation surveys and using taxonomical keys
  • Comfortable driving trucks with trailers and UTVs on unimproved roads and two tracks
  • Experience working for the Forest Service or another land management agency

Responsibilities

  • Inventory stock tanks, pipelines, windmills and assess condition of each and collect GPS locations of range improvements using FieldMaps
  • Assist with mapping active Prairie Dog burrows
  • Monitor short-grass prairie vegetation using line-point intercept, production via clipped weight, and ocular utilization of forage
  • Invasive plant species treatment and monitoring including herbicide use, calibrating spraying equipment, using spray pumps, driving UTVs to sites and maintaining equipment
  • Keeping detailed herbicide treatment records
  • Mapping of invasive plant populations and treatment sites
  • Special status plant identification and inventory
  • Potential to help with restoration efforts including seed collection and dispersion
  • Cross disciplinary opportunities exist with other resources, such as botany, recreation, wildlife or fisheries projects
