About The Position

The Sulphur Ranger District on the Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest is seeking
a motivated SCA placement interested in forestry to assist our Timber Staff in a
wide range of timber management and forestry related activities. The placement
will be trained by and work directly with permanent Forest Service staff.

Requirements

• Ability to conduct strenuous field work and carry out duties in steep and rugged terrain at high elevations and potentially work in adverse weather conditions.
• Valid Driver’s License. Must be able to drive 4x4 trucks on forest roads.
• Must be able to work with other people on a crew and under the direction of USFS staff
• This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Responsibilities

• Surveying seedling regeneration in cutting units and post-fire landscapes
• Using GPS equipment and mapping applications to navigate and map cutting unit boundaries
• Assisting with reconnaissance and layout of cutting units
• Marking cutting unit boundaries with tracer paint
• Conducting basic measurements of tree diameters and heights using measurement tools associated with timber cruising
• Attend monthly safety meetings
• Perform maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment
• Assist other resource areas as needed on an infrequent basis
