This Position reports to: Research Department Manager Your role and responsibilities In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in dynamic, international teams comprised of people with a wide range of experience and competencies to develop technical innovations for ABB Electrification and Motion Business Areas. Each day, you will conduct groundbreaking initiatives in technologies related to electrical apparatus e.g., electrical motors, instrument transformers, and switchboards) addressing, for instance, their modelling (insulation/conductive/magnetic), materials selection, manufacturing, or testing. You will also be able to pursue personal initiatives and entrepreneurial behavior in a challenging and rewarding work environment. This is an on-site position in Raleigh, NC. This role is contributing to the ABB Corporate Research Center located on North Carolina State’s Centennial Campus in Raleigh, NC.

Requirements

  • Bachelors (with 5+ years of industrial experience), or Master’s degree (with 2+ years of industrial experience) or PhD with in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Electrical or Industrial preferred) or Physics
  • Expertise in at least two of the following areas: materials development/selection/testing, manufacturing (e.g., casting/injection molding/extrusion, 3-D printing, and welding are few examples), modelling (mechanical, and thermal preferred); knowledge in Matlab, Solidworks (or Creo), Ansys, and hands-on approach to solve practical challenges involving prototyping.
  • Demonstrate ability to translate technical specifications project planning, required technical documentation, and reporting.
  • Able to travel upwards of 10% or as needed

Responsibilities

  • Modelling, designing, building, testing, and recommending solutions applied to industrial electrical components and (sub)systems.
  • Bringing an innovative approach interfacing with local and external partners in achieving the best technical results on time and on budget.
  • Challenging existing methodologies, shortening design cycles and de-risking novel technologies.
