About The Position

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior R&D Engineer to support our Thermoformed Packaging division. This role is responsible for developing, designing, and qualifying new thermoplastic materials and processes for a wide range of end-use markets. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in identifying and commercializing sustainable packaging solutions by applying deep technical expertise in polymer science, extrusion, thermoforming, and material handling. This position will also focus on identifying growth opportunities, driving productivity improvements, and leading technical projects that enhance capacity and efficiency across manufacturing plants. This is a direct-hire role.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science
  • 7+ years of experience in plastics manufacturing and processing, including extrusion, thermoforming, and tooling
  • Strong expertise in thermoplastic material properties (thermal, mechanical, rheological)
  • Hands-on experience processing PET, PP, HIPS, and PE resins; knowledge of additives required
  • Proven experience leading capital projects in manufacturing environments
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across functions (commercial, manufacturing, supply management)
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills with a results-driven mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Inquisitive, innovative thinker with a proactive, “can-do” attitude

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying coatings and lamination to rigid sheet preferred
  • Background in consumer-based food packaging is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in plastic material processing for consumer packaging applications
  • Develop and qualify new thermoplastic materials, processes, and technologies from concept through commercialization
  • Provide technical recommendations on manufacturing equipment to support current operations and future growth
  • Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers to integrate and execute complex technical projects
  • Address internal and external customer needs by identifying packaging solutions in a manufacturing environment
  • Drive innovation by originating new ideas aligned with R&D product and technology strategies
  • Lead and support capital projects, working closely with OEMs and suppliers
  • Identify and execute initiatives to improve productivity, efficiency, and manufacturing capability
  • Foster a collaborative, safe, and engaging work environment within the R&D organization
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and procedures
