About The Position

The City of Plano is looking for innovative and forward-thinking people to join our team as a Public Works Crew Leader in the Signal Department. As a Crew Leader, you will be responsible for maintaining the Signal Lights and Signal Lights functionalities in the City of Plano. May have opportunities for overtime as well. Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Public Works Crew Leader leads the work activities of assigned staff. Engages in the operations, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure (streets, sidewalks, alleys, signalized equipment, pavement markings, signs, drainage systems, etc.). Distinguishing Characteristics: The incumbent carries out adequate and practical methods to attain desired objectives as assigned by a supervisor and working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in executing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of Signal equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement.

  • Knowledge of pavement markings, signalized intersections, and traffic safety.
  • Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; must be able to read, interpret and explain observations in infrastructure deterioration and preventative maintenance techniques; providing guidance, leadership, and assistance to assigned staff; operating, maneuvering, and controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, or materials used; addressing and resolving customer complaints and concerns; performing basic mathematical calculations; reading and interpreting maps, charts, and schematics.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure (sidewalks, streets, alleys, screening walls, drainage systems, pavement markings, signs and/or signalized intersections).

Nice To Haves

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I preferred
  • IMSA Certification Level I and II preferred.
  • Lead experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the work activities of assigned maintenance staff engaged in maintaining the City's infrastructure.
  • Maintains, and completes daily work orders through asset management and work order software.
  • Provides communication and job information to customers and Supervisors.
  • Ensures work sites are safe and appropriately secured in accordance with Public Works Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensures own and subordinates' proper use of personal protective equipment and following all job site safety requirements.
  • Operates a backhoe, tandem dump truck, street sweeper, loader, air hammer, chain saw, mortar mixer, pump, grinder, or other related tools and equipment.
  • Inspects vehicles, equipment and tools to ensure they are safe, cleaned, maintained, fueled and ready for use at all times.
  • Addresses and resolves citizen complaints in a respectful and courteous manner through clear communication and accurate information sharing.
  • Participates in training subordinate personnel, including Equipment Operators, and Maintenance Workers.
  • Completes locate requests for marking infrastructure to prevent damage during third-party construction activities.
  • Investigates citizen requests to evaluate next steps for prioritization of work, including repairs of pavement, sidewalks, alleys, signs, drainage systems, signalized intersections, screening walls and pavement markings.
  • Tree trimming and removal to maintain right-of-way visibility.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Evaluation, repair and replacement of traffic control devices including signs, pavement markings, and signalized intersection equipment.
