About The Position

Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) is seeking a detail-oriented, experienced professional to help ensure the quality, safety, and compliance of our public sanitary sewer projects. As a Public Works Construction Inspector II, you’ll play a vital role in monitoring construction activities, verifying adherence to plans and specifications, and collaborating with contractors, engineers, and project managers to deliver projects that serve our community for years to come. The Public Works Construction Inspector II leads and participates in reviewing approved major complex technical public works construction plans and conducts on-site observations of construction projects to ensure that work is done in compliance with specifications. This is distinguished from the Public Works Construction Inspector I due to its responsibility of leading and training staff and inspecting major complex construction activity.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience inspecting construction projects such as sewers, water lines, roadways, bridges, or flood control channels INCLUDING two years of experience inspecting public works construction projects. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • OR: Two years of experience with Pima County as a Public Works Construction Inspector I, or a similar level position which is responsible for inspecting public works construction projects.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three (3) years as a foreman/lead in underground utility construction.
  • Minimum three (3) years as an inspector for wastewater sewer systems, water distribution systems, and or storm drain systems.
  • Experience in standard construction procedures and techniques.
  • Experience with/knowledge of using computers.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, assigns work, trains staff, and interprets approved major complex construction plans, specifications, and special provisions as a basis for conducting all construction inspection activity
  • Inspects major construction of concrete structures such as bridges, overpasses, and box culverts for placement of concrete, false-work and forms, steel reinforcement, rebar, and caissons for general compliance with county specifications
  • Inspects earthwork operations, including clearing of construction site, roadway, drainage, and structural excavations, backfill operations and embankment fills or trenches, bedding, shading, backfill, and other elements of construction for compliance with county specifications and standards
  • Performs sub-grade and aggregate base course inspection for materials stability, width of roadway, and gradation
  • Inspects asphaltic concrete paving and chip seal operations or piping, aggregate base course, concrete, paving, and other construction materials for compliance with county specifications and approved plans
  • Oversees and participates in the coordination with contractors, architects, and various departmental sections in order to meet requirements and provisions set forth in the construction plans
  • Ensures traffic control and work-site safety measures are taken
  • Oversees daily site checks to review and monitor construction progress
  • Conducts informal pre-construction meeting with site foreman to review requirements and provisions set forth in the construction plans
  • Resolves issues with site foreman over identified noncompliance
  • Serves as departmental liaison with the project contractor, other agencies, and the private sector, and accompanies visiting inspectors representing public or other agencies having jurisdiction over the project and reports the outcome of such inspections to management
  • Works with utility companies to establish desirable locations for utilities, given construction constraints, and inspects installation of utility and drainage pipes
  • Maintains daily records, written reports, and pictorial documentation of contractor’s work performed, validates monthly pay estimates, and compiles post-construction documentation
