About The Position

Background on NYCEM: New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) is a coordinating agency for the City of New York. The agency plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness, coordinates emergency response and recovery, and collects and disseminates emergency information. The agency maintains a disciplined unit of emergency management personnel including but not limited to attorneys, responders, planners, watch commanders, logisticians, community outreach, communications, administrative and support staff to identify and respond to various hazards. The External Affairs division works to engage with New Yorkers, elected officials, community organizations, private businesses and regional partners to inform them about the agency’s and the City’s efforts before, during, and after an emergency. Its units include Public Information (Press and Communications), Government Relations, and Strategic Partnerships. The Public Information unit is comprised of two units: Press and Communications. Press serves as the spokespeople for the agency. Communications works in conjunction with other External Affairs divisions to prepare and disseminate NYC Emergency Management’s preparedness message as well as promote the initiatives of all agency units. Description of Project/ Intern Responsibilities: The Press Intern will support the NYC Emergency Management External Affairs team in communicating critical information to the public during both planned events (such as FIFA World Cup and Sail American250) and emergency activations.

  • The selected candidate will be required to provide a letter confirming matriculation with an accredited college/university. Further letters will be required for each semester (spring, summer, fall) while working at NYCEM.
  • Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the execution of communications strategies to position NYCEM as a trusted source of information on emergency preparedness, response, and citywide coordination.
  • Drafting press releases, talking points, and other written materials on a range of topics including severe weather, emergency response, public safety, and major citywide events.
  • Working closely with subject matter experts across the agency to build out messaging on issues related to emergency management operations, planning, and interagency coordination.
  • Helping plan and support press conferences, media availabilities, and public-facing events.
  • Monitoring news coverage and social media related to New York City, emergencies, and NYCEM operations, and assisting with compiling daily media clips.
  • Engaging with members of the New York City press corps and sitting in on interviews and media engagements.
