About The Position

This position is a supervisory role primarily engaged in managing a team of epidemiologists. The incumbent will be responsible for guiding investigations of epidemic and endemic diseases, analyzing disease causes, advising on disease control methods, and communicating with the medical community and the public regarding disease prevention. The role also involves serving as a liaison and participating in collaborative projects with various partners, designing and conducting complex epidemiological analyses, and providing subject-matter expertise in communicable disease surveillance and outbreak investigations. Additionally, the manager will evaluate and recommend quality improvements, prepare budget recommendations, monitor expenditures, and oversee the development and presentation of public and industrial education programs concerning environmental issues.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of epidemiology and control of specified infections or chronic diseases.
  • Considerable knowledge of and practical experience in the use of principles of epidemiology.
  • Considerable knowledge of the maintenance of disease surveillance systems, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Considerable knowledge of state and local public and individual health problems and programs.

  • A master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or biological sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Spend the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities, including communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees.
  • Plan and direct employees' work.
  • Have the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action.
  • Develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensure proper coverage, and complete timesheets.
  • Guide a team of epidemiologists in designing and initiating investigations of epidemic and endemic diseases.
  • Participate in and supervise other staff in analyzing disease causes, advising on disease control methods, communicating with the medical community and the public regarding disease prevention, implementing disease control measures, and assisting in the development of policies and procedures for new and existing control programs.
  • Serve as a liaison and participate in collaborative projects with partners in other CHD program areas, governmental agencies, academic institutions, healthcare entities, and community organizations.
  • Design and conduct complex epidemiological analyses to inform public health decisions.
  • Interpret and present statistical output to various audiences via technical reports, oral presentations, or peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise in communicable disease surveillance and outbreak investigations.
  • Evaluate and recommend quality improvement to systems, protocols, and reports.
  • Represent the department in meetings and communications with committees, task forces, and other organizations to encourage timely disease reporting and promote other interests of the department.
  • Prepare budget recommendations and justifications for assigned program(s), including staffing levels and expenditures for equipment, supplies, and other needs, to assist in developing the division/department's annual budget.
  • Monitor and approve expenditures to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and to meet grant deliverables.
  • Oversee the development of public and industrial education programs concerning environmental issues.
  • Make presentations to schools, businesses, and community groups.
  • Oversee the production of public information brochures and materials to create a better understanding of programs, services, policies, and projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
