About The Position

A Public Health Representative II works to control and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) by identifying and counseling people who have been exposed to such diseases and motivating them to be promptly examined and treated. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in homes, health clinics and communities where there is possible exposure to contagious diseases and undesirable environments. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

Requirements

Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Have two years of experience performing investigative work.
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
Candidates who are hired as Public Health Representatives will be terminated from employment with Baltimore City if they do not complete and pass a required Federal Center for Disease Control training program within the first six months of employment.
Ability to read, understand, retain and transmit information about sexually transmitted diseases.
Ability to motivate others to reveal personal information and seek medical treatment.
Ability to work effectively with people of diverse sexual orientation and ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Ability to provide and obtain information from people who may be reluctant to communicate and are hostile.
Ability to communicate effectively with health care providers and a diverse population in the community.
Ability to be non-judgmental and keep sensitive information confidential.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to relay and obtain sensitive and personal information in a professional manner.
Ability to educate others concerning sexually transmitted diseases.
Ability to prepare reports and document STD investigations.
Ability to operate a personal computer.
