The Part-Time Youth Worker plays a key frontline role at the Safe Place Services Drop-In Center, providing day-to-day support for young adults (ages 18–24) experiencing homelessness or housing instability. This position helps maintain a safe, welcoming environment and ensures that youth have consistent access to meals, showers, laundry, rest spaces, and supplies. The Youth Worker works closely with the Drop-In Center team to manage daily operations, assist with facility upkeep, and build trusting, respectful relationships with program participants.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required; some college or relevant certifications preferred.
  • 1+ year experience working or volunteering with youth, especially those from marginalized communities.
  • Ability to connect with young adults in a respectful and non-authoritarian way.
  • Comfortable with fast-paced environments and shifting tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care, harm reduction, or youth development is a plus.
  • Lived experience or direct knowledge of homelessness, foster care, or related systems is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate and model YMCA core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring in all interactions.
  • Greet and engage with youth in a trauma-informed, nonjudgmental, and youth-centered manner.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the Drop-In Center, including: Distributing hygiene supplies, snacks, and meals Managing access to showers and laundry sign-ups Monitoring and maintaining rest and common spaces Supporting the flow of foot traffic and usage of the computer lab
  • Support daily upkeep of the facility: light cleaning, supply organization, restocking, and room set-ups.
  • De-escalate minor conflicts and bring concerns to the Drop-In Center Manager as needed.
  • Help implement daily programming or life skills activities as assigned.
  • Serve as a consistent adult presence who is attentive, reliable, and responsive to youth needs.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
