The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Adult Correction Comprehensive Health Services strives to provide North Carolina offenders access to quality, cost effective healthcare that is rendered by dedicated mental health professionals. Psychologists provide direct psychological services to offenders including those with severe and persistent mental illnesses and personality disorders. Such services include psychological assessments, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy and consultations with medical, custody and classification staff about behavioral management strategies for problem offenders. Psychologists may also conduct risk assessments on offenders with a history of violent or sexual crimes. Other responsibilities may include conducting staff training on relevant mental health topics such as management of the mentally ill and developmentally disabled and management of suicide precautions.
