About The Position

This position is located in the Investigations Division of the Police Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of the Property Crimes Specialist is to respond to non-emergency calls for police service such as property crimes, public nuisance, non-injury collisions, etc., that do not require the presence of a commissioned police officer. The position incumbent has regular contact with an immediate supervisor, sworn law-enforcement personnel, Officers of the court, and residents who may be angry and disgruntled or may have been victimized.  Assignments are received from an immediate supervisor both verbally and in writing. The work products are reviewed by a supervisor or technical staff for overall quality, accuracy, and adherence to departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
  • Knowledge of standard criminal investigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard collision investigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard police interview techniques.
  • Knowledge or criminal law and state statutes.
  • Knowledge of police report writing techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic drawing and photography.
  • Knowledge of basic DNA evidence collection and fingerprinting techniques.
  • Knowledge of standard police evidence collection techniques.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in working with citizens who may be upset, anxious, and/or angry.
  • Ability to apply deductive or logical reasoning.
  • Ability and willingness to testify in court.
  • Ability and willingness to handle and process firearms and other weapons for evidentiary purposes.
  • Ability and willingness to follow established departmental safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting initial criminal investigations in the field and/or over the telephone.
  • Completing crime incident and/or supplemental information reports.
  • Interviewing crime victims, reporting parties, and witnesses.
  • Performing basic crime scene evidence retrieval processes such as collecting latent fingerprints, swabbing for DNA, collecting and packaging potential evidence, taking crime scene photographs, and introducing evidence or testifying in court. 
  • Signing citations as a witness under certain circumstances as a commissioned District Court Clerk.
  • Serving as a backup for Crime Scene Investigators on crime scenes.
  • Investigating non-injury accidents including hit and run collisions.
  • Completing other related activities or tasks as assigned.
