About The Position

Do you like spending time outdoors and in the forest? If so, here is an amazing opportunity to be an Archaeological Technician working on federal and state forests in Vermont, conducting fieldwork to identify and protect historic and cultural resources. You will perform surveys, shovel testing, artifact analysis, site monitoring, and data management, often working in rugged, remote locations. The archaeological technician will perform archaeological work as part of a crew under the supervision of FPR and at times seconded to Green Mountain National Forest's Heritage Program Manager & staff.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience at or above a technical level in program administration support (such as administrating components of a licensing and certification program, or records management).
  • OR
  • Two years or more of full-time college coursework OR an associate's degree or higher AND one (1) year or more of experience at or above a technical level in program administration support (such as administrating components of a licensing and certification program, or records management).
  • Position involves hiking in rugged environments in varying weather conditions, often carrying equipment including shovels and screens.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the theories, principles, and concepts of archeology, including reconnaissance, evaluation, and basic field survey procedures to conduct reconnaissance and surveys.
  • The ability to work well in a professional team environment.
  • Previous relevant field school experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct archaeological pedestrian surveys and shovel testing in a variety of terrains, landscapes, and elevations in support of timber sales on state lands and in support of the Forest Heritage Program requirements on federal lands for a variety of forest projects
  • Act as an assistant crew lead to a crew of 1-3 members as needed
  • In conducting field searches, identifies and marks archeological sites, prepares site location maps, records findings, photographs artifact findings, and prepares sites sketches as necessary
  • May drive field vehicles in rugged and remote terrain and must have a valid state driver's license
  • Selects, interprets, and applies technical guidelines to analyze archeological data and prepares site forms to document findings
  • Assists with the preparation of reports about nature and extent of known cultural resources
  • Searches for and examines historical records as well as the findings of other archeological experts relative to the history of the area
  • Utilizes ArcGIS software to analyze data and prepare maps for site forms and reports
  • Completes artifact cataloguing and curation as needed
