About The Position

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail systemwithout compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. DOC seeks to recruit two interns to support our facilities Program Coordination. These interns would be assigned to report to an Executive Director of Facility Programs. The interns would be responsible for supporting program initiatives at the jails that they’re assigned including creating and managing schedules of programs, assisting with events at the facility and managing tasks associated with the successful implementation of events, recruiting people in custody to attend programs and services, providing people in custody with programs and services as appropriate and assigned based on the intern’s skills and interests, and completing data and supporting reporting on programming occurring in the jail. Additional typical duties for this position include but are not limited to: Daily interaction with individuals in custody Provision of rehabilitative programs and services Completion of forms, reports, and data regarding services afforded to individuals in custody. Program evaluation, research, and the provision of recommendations regarding the rehabilitation programs Submit reports and charts as required. Attend training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities Work in a multidisciplinary team with uniformed correctional staff and providers to achieve rehabilitative program goals Perform related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
  • NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in human services is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and working with justice involved populations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional staff.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and documents.
  • Knowledge of human development and behavior, counseling techniques, behavior modification and intervention techniques.
  • Ability to mentor and provide positive interaction, guidance and leadership to people in custody.
  • Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
