About The Position

The Getty Foundation is dedicated to advancing art historical scholarships, conserving works of art and architecture, increasing access to museum and archival collections, and training future arts professionals through strategic and collaborative grantmaking. The organization is seeking a thoughtful, energetic, and detail-oriented professional with a strong interest in arts philanthropy to join its Grants Programming team as a Program Assistant. This role reports to the Senior Program Officer overseeing national and international grant initiatives in art history and art archives. The position offers an exciting opportunity to learn the full lifecycle of grantmaking, from project development and application review through approval, implementation, close-out, and impact assessment. It involves frequent coordination with universities, archives, and research centers worldwide, requiring exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and timelines effectively. The ideal candidate will anticipate needs, communicate proactively, and provide well-organized support with consistent follow-through. The Program Assistant will join a dynamic and collaborative team advancing Getty’s global philanthropic work in the arts. The campus provides a vibrant environment with access to art, archives, special collections, public programs, speakers, and a world-class research library. The position includes opportunities for national travel for conferences and site visits, as well as additional professional development. This role is based on-site at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, with eligibility for a hybrid telework policy based on satisfactory job performance. Relocation assistance is not offered.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's/BA required
  • Excellent research and writing abilities, particularly in the field of art history
  • Ability to prioritize and manage several projects at once
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Proven experience with data management systems, databases, content management systems, and/or digital or electronic file management systems
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with staff and manage working relationships with external professionals (e.g., consultants, grantees, etc.)
  • A writing sample is required to be considered for this position

Nice To Haves

  • Masters/MA preferred in art history, history, museum studies, or a related field
  • Minimum three years work experience in a nonprofit cultural organization preferred
  • Some knowledge of philanthropy preferred
  • Reading knowledge of a foreign language a plus

Responsibilities

  • Tracking grant applications from initial development through review and award processes
  • Drafting grant recommendations
  • Corresponding with current, potential, and past grantees
  • Researching new and existing grant initiatives
  • Contributing to evaluating grant projects and initiatives at various stages in their lifecycle
  • Monitoring grant reports, including detailed budgets
  • Maintaining accurate data in digital content management systems
  • Interfacing with Grants Administration to comply with internal audit procedures, grantmaking processes, and to ensure quality of data entry
