About The Position

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Professional Writing Consultant - Boca Raton, FL. Undergraduate Studies is seeking a dedicated Professional Writing Consultant to join the University Center for Excellence in Writing. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to strengthen their professional writing, mentoring, and communication skills while gaining meaningful experience in higher education and related fields. As a Professional Writing Consultant, you will support undergraduate students through individualized writing consultations at the writing center. In addition to one-on-one assistance, you will play an important role in our new initiative designed to help incoming students succeed by facilitating small-group writing workshops within first-year writing courses. This position is ideal for those who value collaboration, enjoy helping others grow as writers, and are committed to fostering a supportive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Rhetoric and Composition, English Literature, Creative Writing, Education, or a related discipline, and one year of teaching experience required.
  • Must demonstrate professional spoken and written communication skills when engaging with students and faculty.
  • Applicants are required to submit a writing sample, which may be academic, creative, or professional in nature. Submissions should be uploaded as a PDF (preferred method) or provided as a link to online material. If a link is used, it must also be included on the applicant’s resume.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized, one-on-one writing consultations for undergraduate students.
  • Facilitate writing workshops that support first-year writing courses throughout the semester.
  • Assess student needs and deliver clear, targeted feedback on writing projects.
  • Help students identify recurring patterns in their writing and develop strategies for improvement.
  • Listen actively to student concerns and tailor support accordingly.
  • Manage session time effectively to establish and meet session goals.
  • Accurately and consistently document session outcomes using client report forms.
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings at the writing center.
  • Communicate unique challenges or concerns to the Assistant Director as needed.
  • Assist with outreach efforts to promote writing center services and increase student engagement.
