About The Position

The Professional Writing Tutor (PWT) is supervised by the Learning Center Manager. The PWT will provide guidance, support, and facilitate student learning by helping to clarify content in courses that require extensive writing assignments; model the use of appropriate study strategies to ensure student success. PWT will understand (English) ENG 101 & ENG 102 course content; assist students with writing assignments, research, and editing of papers. This includes, but not limited to, sentence and paragraph structure, grammar rules, arguments logic, critical analysis, and citation formats.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in English, or related field, plus one-year of experience working with students in a Higher Education setting.
  • Knowledgeable of quality writing processes of essay and research.
  • Knowledgeable of the APA, MLA, and other writing formats.
  • Knowledgeable of FERPA laws to ensure confidentiality.
  • Knowledgeable on Writing & Research for best practices in Higher Education.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites program (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to new conditions and assignments.
  • Demonstrates high level discretion and sound judgment re: confidential information,
  • Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual to deliver quality tutorial services with a positive attitude,
  • Demonstrates the college's values of Taa ho ajit eego, Ahil na'anish, il idlii, and il eehozin in a work setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong student relations with a diverse student population including students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the role of Professional Writing Tutor in providing guidance and support to enhance students' learning and development.
  • Must be able to lift, pull/push and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to work flexible hours in evening and weekends during the mid-term and final exams week; totaling 40-hours a week.
  • Attend/complete First Aid/CPR & AED training.
  • This is a grant funded position, the position requires working on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with on-boarding and orientation for ALL students, including access to the DC Portal, the Learning Center platform, and access to Canvas, and IT account access.
  • Facilitate guided discussions with students, one-to-one or group setting on writing assignments without doing the work for the students.
  • Applies easy to understand instructions to assist students understanding for writing assignments.
  • Facilitate guided questions to assist students to think critically, further helping students understand how to improve their writing skills.
  • Guide students through the writing processes - prewriting includes brainstorming & outlining, drafting, revising, proofreading, and editing.
  • Will work with ENG instructors to understand the writing assignments as outlined in the Syllabi.
  • Be recognizant of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) when working with student information using referrals and scheduling.
  • Be recognizant of the FERPA when it comes to record and data monitoring using ConexED, J1, and emailing students.
  • Assist with planning to host at least two ENG workshops a month in person and via ZOOM.
  • Attends regular meetings and training related to the initiatives of the Learning Center.
  • Collaborate with faculty and support staff to identify needs for interventions, i.e. tutoring, workshops, resources, fairs, and new student orientation. Become familiar with Campus and Academic Resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty teaching courses: English 101 & 102; MLA & APA writing & citation formats.
  • Recommend staying current on national trends and best practices for Professional Writing Tutors with Higher Education settings.
  • Become familiar with campus resources, i.e. Library for research platforms; compile a research based resources to share with students to develop their writing needs.
  • Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions both individually and in group settings; submit weekly reports to supervisor.
  • Important to sign in/out for documentation of hours worked.
  • Assist with providing a supported learning environment for ALL students from different multicultural and diverse backgrounds including students with disabilities.
  • Not limited to: Assist with Learning Center program planning in the evenings and weekend if warranted.
