Product Engineer

Essen Medical Associates

About The Position

ecares health is a healthcare technology startup spun out of Essen Health Care, a large multispecialty provider group in the Bronx. They are building the care coordination OS that brings concierge medicine to underserved communities. Their platform powers proactive outreach, intelligent care programs, and automated scheduling, helping provider groups ensure no patient falls through the cracks. Through their unique relationship with Essen Health Care, they have access to clinical and operational experts who help drive product strategy and refine their vision. The platform is currently live with active users at Essen and is finalizing expansion to more practices across New York City. ecares health aims to leverage LLMs and other cutting-edge technology to build the operational infrastructure that makes care coordination work, committed to the belief that technology is society's strongest lever to improve health at a population level. They are hiring a Product Engineer to join their founding engineering team. This role involves working closer to the problem than a Software Engineer, taking a loosely defined need (e.g., "care managers need a better way to see which patients are falling behind on their care plan") and owning the feature from discovery to development to launch. The Product Engineer will work directly with the product team and their designer to shape features and how users interact with the platform. This role requires product judgment as much as engineering skill, making tradeoff calls in the moment regarding what's good enough for v1, what edge case actually matters, and what will confuse a care coordinator versus what will save them 20 minutes a day. The successful candidate needs to be comfortable making those calls and moving, then adjusting based on what they observe.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful experience building user-facing products
  • Strong frontend skills and enough backend to be self-sufficient
  • Product instinct: ability to look at a workflow, identify what's broken, and propose a solution that's practical and buildable without a detailed spec
  • Good design sense: care about how things look and feel, not just whether they work; ability to partner with a designer effectively and fill in the gaps on your own when needed
  • Comfortable with ambiguity: ability to start with a problem, not a solution; ask the right questions, make reasonable assumptions, and course-correct as you learn

Nice To Haves

  • Health tech or healthcare experience
  • Experience with HER systems or healthcare data
  • Experience working directly with end users to understand workflows and iterate on solutions
  • Background in design, UX research, or working closely with design teams
  • Background working with underserved communities or in mission-driven organizations

Responsibilities

  • Manage the data layer and intelligence layer of ecares, including patient, provider, scheduling, and care coordination data
  • Manage operational performance metrics
  • Manage product analytics for new features
  • Manage predictive models for access, utilization, and outcomes
  • Manage data pipelines and experimentation frameworks
  • Directly influence how patients are scheduled
  • Directly influence how providers are utilized
  • Directly influence how care teams coordinate
  • Directly influence how product features are designed
  • Build and manage data pipelines connecting eClinicalWorks (eCW), ecares health, and operational systems
  • Design data models that reflect real healthcare workflows
  • Create prototypes, simulations, and experiments to test scheduling efficiency, no-show reduction, and care coordination outcomes
  • Partner with product owners, software engineers, and operations and clinical leaders
  • Define and track KPIs that matter in healthcare: Access, Throughput, Outcomes, Utilization
  • Help decide what features should be built based on data
  • Design analytics that are embedded directly into the product
  • Operate as both a data engineer and a product & operations consultant
