About The Position

The Melissa & Doug Product Design team is seeking a talented, playful and energetic design student to assist with the development of our diverse product lines. As an Intern, you will be expected to perform a variety of tasks that support our design and development process. The candidate should demonstrate emerging skills in design, have a drive to innovate play, and a strong desire to learn about the business of making toys. You will be asked to collaborate with a broad cross section of individuals from various departments, while you contribute your creativity and problem-solving skills across multiple projects. Requirements

  • Must be a current undergraduate student with at least one year of study completed in a design program: Product, Toy, Fashion, or Illustration
  • Excellent sketching, rendering and/or graphic design skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Must be able to work full-time as an intern
  • Has a can-do attitude and has a great love of toys!

Nice To Haves

  • CAD model building, physical fabrication and video editing skills are all a plus, but not required
  • Knowledge of plastics, fashion, animation, electronics, or mechanical design is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm new products and categories for expansion
  • Research and identify trends in play, toy categories, fashion and children’s entertainment to create mood boards that inspire new thinking and validate design rationale
  • Visually communicate new product concepts through sketching, digital design, CAD, physical model building and/or video editing
  • Support Concept Development of existing items or brands
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teammates in Engineering, Brand Marketing, Packaging, and Entertainment to refine product concepts for development
  • Create compelling product presentation slides
  • Prepare and help set up deliverables for product review presentations
  • Create detailed turn-around drawings of product designs
  • Create design specification sheets to define product specifics for development & manufacturing.
  • Participate in design and development meetings with overseas partners
  • Assist in the evaluation of models and production samples to ensure quality of design and play experiences meet brand expectations
  • Attend cross functional team meetings and company milestone meetings
  • Participate, contribute to, and present a group project at the completion of the internship
