About The Position

The Principal Mentor, under the leadership of the Regional Sr. Leader, is responsible for the individual support to identified principals. This position coordinates and facilitates interventions and professional learning experiences to guide the growth and development of selected principals, and can serve multiple school locations. The Principal Mentor will work closely with the Superintendent to ensure that support for identified principals is aligned and consistent.

Requirements

  • Expertise in applicable grade-level Common Core State Standards, Instructional leadership and teaching experience: proven results in student learning as an instructional leader
  • Knowledge of teacher and leader development frameworks and ability to co-develop aligned content and systems (ex., Transformational Leadership Framework-TLF, Aspire Student Learning Framework-ASLF)
  • Command of the instruction-assessment cycle, and ability to apply this knowledge to develop a cohesive Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment program
  • Ability to coach others (including school site administrators) and improve their practice
  • Exceptional ability to bridge and enhance cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to manage projects, including development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Ability to communicate proactively, effectively, and provide and act on feedback
  • Strong problem analysis and problem resolution skills using an inquiry framework
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to contribute to a team
  • Understands and applies an equity-centered lens in problem-solving
  • Comfort with engaging in conversations that might push people out of their comfort zones, especially regarding discussions about race and educational equity
  • Bachelor's degree required, with relevant degree and/or content expertise
  • 7+ years of teaching and administrative experience required
  • Clear CA Credential and CLAD certification (our out-of-state equivalent), required

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education preferred
  • 1+ years of experience with school and or district office leadership preferred
  • CA Administrative Services Credential preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides professional development and individual support to principals via collaboration, communication, and effective coaching practices.
  • Works closely with Regional Sr. Leadership to ensure that individual support and feedback for identified principals are aligned with the school's priorities and the principal's development goals.
  • Supports the principal in developing a school improvement plan and partners with the Regional Sr. Leadership to hold the principal accountable for implementing the plan's actions.
  • Spends considerable time (approximately 80% of time) in identified schools providing direct support to identified principals by observing instruction, data/school leadership/faculty/coaching meetings, PLCs, and daily school activities and providing support and feedback to the principal in the execution of his/her duties; partners with principal to identify specific areas to add capacity by taking on leadership responsibilities and modeling effective leadership practices.
  • Coaches and mentors identified principals with a deep understanding of and commitment to implementing the region's academic systems framework and research-based instructional practices.
  • Assists with the teacher and leader recruitment, development, and retention efforts at identified schools to ensure that highly effective teachers and leaders are serving students.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed.
  • Lead principals in region-wide initiatives, including long-term strategic planning and medium-term process improvement as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other Mentor Principals, Principals, and the Regional Office to achieve organizational goals for the secondary program.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support Aspire Public Schools' mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
