About The Position

Power Plant Mechanic Apprentice is an on-the-job training classification in which the employee enters a formalized four-year knowledge, skill, and ability development program. The program is designed to culminate in the attainment of journey-level proficiency upon graduation from the program. Apprentices are responsible for their professional development through participation and self-application from on-the-job training and education opportunities provided. Apprentices undergo periodic written and performance testing to measure knowledge and skills development administered by a Joint Apprenticeship Committee. OPEN EXAMINATION - NOTE: THIS RECRUITMENT FOR POWER PLANT MECHANIC APPRENTICE IS AN UNCLASSIFIED, NON-CIVIL SERVICE, AT-WILL FULL TIME POSITION. WHILE EMPLOYED, THE INDIVIDUAL APPOINTED WILL RECEIVE THE SAME SALARY, BENEFITS AND LEAVE ACCRUALS AS COMPARABLE SALARIED CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class C California driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all employees, customers, vendors and other City departments.
  • Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
  • Work the necessary hours and times, including overtime as authorized for non-management staff, to complete goals, tasks, and objectives.
  • Ensure the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Foster a teamwork environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Give and receive direction in English.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate or use all position-related software, equipment and tools effectively and safely.
  • Actively participate in maintaining a secure computing environment by adhering to and implementing City cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices. This includes understanding common cyber threats such as phishing and malware, and promptly reporting suspicious activities.
  • Work independently and/or in a team setting.
  • Comply with the National Standards Institute's requirements on practices for respiratory protection and hearing loss.
  • Adhere to the home study course schedule comprised of plant problems and system drawings set forth by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  • Complete a home study course on his/her own time, including attending college courses and training classes related to the job.
