The Janelia Experimental Technology (jET) group, in collaboration with the Reiser Lab (HHMI Janelia) and the Schnitzer Lab (Stanford University; HHMI) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in robotics, mechatronics, systems engineering, machine vision, AI/ML systems, or autonomous control to join our collaborative neuroengineering efforts. This person will build AI-driven robotic systems for high-throughput brain imaging and behavioral phenotyping in Drosophila , the fruit fly that powers modern neuroscience discoveries. This project builds on the Schnitzer lab’s advances in robotic experimentation, laser microsurgery, and optical voltage imaging, and the Reiser labs’ expertise in instrumentation, fly behavior, neural circuit analysis, and connectomics. This position is part of AI@HHMI, a ten-year initiative to integrate artificial intelligence throughout the scientific process. During the initial phase of the project, the researcher will spend significant time on-site at Stanford University working with the Schnitzer Lab to learn and document the existing FlyMAX system. This may involve an extended stay at Stanford during the initial ramp-up period. Afterward, the position will be based primarily at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA, with periodic travel for continued collaboration. The successful candidate will bring a deep interest in applying engineering and computational approaches to problems in biology and neuroscience. Working closely with members of the MCN-NET (Neuroengineering Team) and JET’s mechanical engineers and fabrication specialists, they will lead efforts to replicate, streamline, adapt, and advance the FlyMAX system, ensuring tight integration across hardware, software, and experimental workflows to support neuroscience research.
