About The Position

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position. The Muhle lab at the Department of Psychiatry of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute is seeking a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented person to assist with research to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders using mouse and cellular model systems. The eligible candidate should be able to perform various molecular and cellular biology techniques including: gDNA, RNA and protein extraction, immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescent imaging. The applicant is expected to analyze and prepare data for presentation, and to manage administrative tasks. Experience in animal handling and animal husbandry is especially sought. The person in this full-time position will be directly supervised by the laboratory principal investigator and will also work closely with students and postdoctoral research fellows.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in neuroscience, molecular genetics, or a related field (degree must be attained by the position start date).
  • Demonstrated record of publications
  • At least (1) year of experience with animal behavior, imaging, and basic molecular and cell biology techniques
  • At least (1) year of experience with computational and statistical analyses, such as python, R, and MatLab programming

Nice To Haves

  • Prior record of grant funding and/or at least 1 year of managing research projects.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and experience using statistical techniques and software (e.g., R python MAtLab, R).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, for presenting research findings and collaborating effectively with team members and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Perform molecular genetics, cellular, and biochemical assays according to established written protocols and procedures and assist in validation of new lab procedures.
  • Prepare reagents for experiments, organize supplies, calibrate and operate laboratory instruments.
  • Manage mouse colony (including husbandry, genotyping and database management).
  • Record detailed data in lab notebook, conduct literature searches and summaries, assist with manuscript preparation and grant applications.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment in compliance with safety standards.
  • Perform necessary laboratory administrative functions such as ordering reagents, filing paperwork, reviewing and compiling data for figures and presentations, and entering information into spreadsheets.
