The candidate will perform volitional drug (e.g., cocaine, heroin) IVSA experiments in mice and rats to explore the molecular underpinnings of substance used disorders. Beyond drug self-administration behavioral experiments, the candidate will perform genomic sequencing (including single-cell sequencing), proteomics, metabolomics, and other relevant methodologies. They will also perform stereotaxic surgeries to assess the impact of viral mediated gene therapy on SUD-related phenotypes. This work seeks to define how these mechanisms contribute to normal transcriptional and cellular plasticity following exposures to addictive drugs of abuse. By advancing our understanding of these processes, the project aims to generate fundamental insights that can guide future therapeutic strategies for substance use disorders and ultimately promote brain health.
