About The Position

The Comprehensive Center for Brain Health (CCBH), part of the Division of Cognitive Neurology within the Department of Neurology, Miller School of Medicine is seeking to hire a Post-doctoral Research Fellow. Comprehensive Center for Brain Health is directed by Dr James E. Galvin, MD, MPH, Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. CCBH is a state-of-the-art 17,000 square foot clinical research facility based in Boca Raton, FL (55 miles north of Miami). The primary research focus of CCBH is to conduct deep phenotyping (including fluid and imaging biomarkers), develop pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, and explore reasons for health disparities in the areas of brain health and neurodegenerative disease using advance analytic and machine learning models. The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will work on independent projects that align with the goals of the laboratory, under the guidance of PI/Research Faculty. This is a full-time position which will involve working in close collaboration with the PI/Research Faculty for projects that focus on conduct deep phenotyping, develop therapies, and explore reasons for health disparities in the areas of brain health and neurodegenerative disease. The post-doctoral fellow will be trained in a holistic manner by the faculty, to succeed as an independent scientist as well as help train the fellow to define and achieve his/her career goals.

Requirements

  • MD or Ph.D. in relevant field
  • No prior experience required
  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • MD or PhD in in Neuroscience, Epidemiology, Psychology, or related field
  • 0-2 years of post-doctoral experience
  • Advanced research training/work experience preferred (e.g., causal methods, longitudinal analysis, life course methods, missing data methods)
  • Prior experience working with longitudinal data preferred.
  • Self-motivated to learn new concepts and epidemiological/statistical methods.
  • Ability to self-learn and work independently without frequent guidance.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Attention to details and to data quality.
  • Data management experience through work and educational experience preferred (cleaning, checking, recoding data for analysis).
  • At least intermediate knowledge of SAS or R programming required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Python and/or machine learning helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.
  • Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.
  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
  • Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Conduct quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods analyses that address the specific aims for grant-funded studies on brain health and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia risk.
  • Must be able to develop independent research projects, research design, execute experiments, record research findings, analyze data, interpret results, and present them well (analytical and critical thinking is important)
  • Develop own independent research projects.
  • Visualize research findings for publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Create new conceptual frameworks or methodologies, as applicable.
  • Serve as primary author or co-author on independent research and study team publications.
  • Collaborate with researchers across the US to advance studies of neighborhood social and built environments and brain health.
  • Prepare and provide presentations of findings at study team meetings and at research symposia/conferences.
  • Assist with grant writing and will be provided opportunities to develop own grant applications.
  • Contribute to community outreach and lay educational opportunities.
