About The Position

CleanJoule is seeking a Research & Development (R&D) Polymerization Chemist to join our team. To be successful in this role, the candidate should have a strong polymer chemistry, organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and material science background. Along with a strong understanding of polymerization kinetics and polymer structure-property relationships, and polymer processing techniques.

Requirements

  • Must have a Master’s of Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related Sciences/Engineering degree and 5+ years of relevant experience or PhD + 3 years of relevant experience
  • Biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry/petrochemical industry experience required
  • Synthesis/development of functional polymer materials/oligomers and various polymerization techniques
  • Strong understanding of polymerization kinetics and polymer structure-property relationships, and polymer processing techniques
  • Prior experience in polymerization, curing, and modification of olefins
  • Prior experience in the operation of high pressure, high temperature stirred tank reactors for polymerization in the 1L – 100L size range
  • Familiarity with a variety of material characterization and surface analysis techniques such as XPS, DSC, TGA, GPC, XRD, SIMS, FTIR, Raman, DMA, TMA, SEM, and Optical Microscopy
  • Good working knowledge of DOEs and statistical data analysis methods (T-test, ANOVA & significance testing)
  • Excellent communication/presentation skills, solid writing skills and collaborative interpersonal skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, self-driven showing initiative and ambition
  • Ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment with challenging deadlines to help the company keep its leading edge
  • Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools and web-based applications is required
  • Prior experience successfully participating in work teams where personal accountability, attention to detail, collaboration, and results were required is essential
  • Frequent lifting and moving of items up to fifty (50) pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies and practices. This position requires the use of personal protective equipment that may include eye or face protection, gloves, masks, respirators, safety shoes, earplugs, coveralls and/or uniforms that are provided by the company and its use is mandatory

Responsibilities

  • Perform investigation of synthetic routes of chemistry and characterization of the materials with various techniques
  • Design and synthesize new materials using controlled polymerization techniques
  • Define the chemical stability/resistance of the materials at various testing conditions
  • Lead and manage research projects focused on the development of new polymer materials and processes
  • Develop and optimize polymerization processes to scale up production while maintaining quality
  • Characterize synthesized polymers and formulated materials using advanced analytical techniques that include rheology, thermal analysis, FTIR, NMR, GPC, gravimetric analyses, and mechanical testing
  • Write standard operating procedures and progress reports
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, materials, process development, quality, and manufacturing to address technical challenges and meet project objectives and timelines
  • Contribute to Intellectual Property development through patent filings
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior chemists and research associates
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape in polymer chemistry, materials research, and characterization techniques
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested
