POLICE SERGEANT POSITION SUMMARY The Authority is currently recruiting a Police Sergeant to join Georgia World Congress Center. The Police Sergeant will supervise and participate in the activities of police patrol on an assigned shift and perform responsible administrative staff duties. Supervision is exercised over Police Officers, Police Recruits, and civilian employees. Will frequently participate in the work performed by Police Officers, and in some assignments are required to become involved in situations requiring extreme physical exertion. Sergeants will often assume complete charge in the absence of a higher ranking officer. Police sergeants work independently in performing regularly assigned duties under the general orders of a Police Lieutenant or other higher ranking supervisor. Performance is evaluated through observation, oral and written reports, and by results obtained. POLICE SERGEANT PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is moderately exposed to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, toxic chemicals, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic, animals, and/or loud noises. The ability to lift 50 pounds or more may be required of this position. Daily shifts will endure various degrees of walking, standing, turning, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling, requiring a full range of body movements. This position may require work inside or outside of the building, as needed by events. In addition to the obvious dangers of confrontations with criminals, police officers need to be constantly alert and ready to deal appropriately with a number threatening situations. Officers frequently work weekends, holidays, and nights. Officers are expected to work at any time their services are needed and may work long hours standing post, making arrests, conducting investigations or during special events. Officers are expected to report for duty in full uniform with the appropriate and necessary equipment needed in the performance of their duty. All positions are required to work in inclement weather conditions if necessary. Tasks include but are limited to working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear. Police officers are armed and are expected to exercise their legal authority appropriately whenever necessary.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull extremely heavy objects over 200 pounds such as in the event of chasing or subduing a suspect resisting arrest.

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of three (3) years sworn and certified experience in law enforcement.
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Certification in good standing
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years of college/university with studies in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises sworn and professional police staff.
  • Calls roll at the beginning of a shift, inspects Police Officers for appearance, readiness and preparation for duty and briefs employees on special tasks or assignments, conducts or provides for training.
  • Serves as a witness in court in connection with arrests and investigations.
  • Investigates complaints or allegations of misconduct against employees of the Police Department.
  • Keeps informed and aware of persons and places suspected of illegal activity and/or potential for problems within an assigned area.
  • Writes reports, obtains warrants, and testifies in court.
  • Reviews and approves reports of subordinates.
  • Enters and retrieves data from a terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
  • Interviews persons with complaints and makes proper disposition or directs them to the proper authorities.
  • Participates in community activities and makes verbal presentations to groups.
  • Secures crime scenes, administers first aid, arbitrates disputes, conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, apprehends suspects, and makes arrests.
  • Patrols the GWCCA Campus by radio equipped car, or on foot, to prevent, discover, and deter the commission of crime, to enforce criminal law, to apprehend law breakers, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle law and parking regulations.
  • Responds to calls involving fire, automobile accidents, crimes, disturbances, and other requests from employees and citizens.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease out of service times of assigned personnel, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with peers, GWCCA staff, and other law enforcement jurisdictions to provide quality customer service.
  • May serve as a field training officer for recruits.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Uphold GWCCA’s service standards and assist in maintaining a positive and professional departmental image.
  • Perform other administrative or special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director of Event Services.
