About The Position

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, the state-certified Law Enforcement Officer enforces the laws of the State of South Carolina, municipal codes as applicable, and federal laws as they apply for properties of the Greenville Health Authority. This role performs all duties of a police officer, applying problem-solving techniques in support of the Department's community policing philosophy to protect life and property. Responsibilities include responding to calls for service, reporting findings, taking appropriate action to resolve issues, patrolling assigned areas, assisting with crime scene security and processing, conducting follow-up investigations, and employing crime reduction/prevention techniques. The officer supports prosecution of criminal cases, acts as a liaison between the Police Department and the campus community, and builds rapport with staff, patients, and visitors. Other duties involve making court appearances, serving warrants/subpoenas, placing items into property and evidence, investigating auto accidents, and directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic as needed. The Greenville Health Authority Police Department does not participate in the South Carolina Police Officer Retirement System (SC PORS); instead, GHA Police Officers are offered a matching 457B plan through Prisma Health as a retirement saving plan. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned.
  • Two (2) years of experience.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • An acceptable motor vehicle record, as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart.
  • Proof of auto insurance.
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification or formerly held a Law Enforcement Officer Certification from another state (with a break in service no more than three (3) years).
  • Basic computer skills including word processing.
  • Mathematical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • College level coursework in criminal justice preferred.
  • Certification through International Association of Hospital Security and Safety (must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas to detect and apprehend criminal activity.
  • Maintains a highly visible presence while on patrol as both a deterrent to criminal activity and an outreach to the general public.
  • Conducts foot patrol of assigned areas, building positive community relations and providing a visual deterrent to criminal activity.
  • Enforces all applicable laws as necessary in providing for the protection and security of the public and property of Prisma Health - Upstate.
  • Investigates complaints and criminal activity to the fullest extent possible, interviewing available witnesses, victims and other participants.
  • Collects physical and photographic evidence.
  • Assists victims in the reporting process.
  • Keep updated on recent criminal activity reported on (i.e. shift pass on, other shifts).
  • Completes all reports and supplemental documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Reports and free of grammatical errors are clearly written.
  • Responds to and investigate collisions as required.
  • Performs traffic control and direction duties as needed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Actively performs enforcement of all state laws for traffic violations as appropriate.
  • Self-initiates field activity and takes the appropriate enforcement action.
  • Responds to citizen traffic complaints.
  • Participates in traffic enforcement activities.
  • Ensures that communication with public is clear, professional and concise.
  • Utilizes proper radio etiquette and communicate clearly and effectively with dispatch and fellow officers.
  • Maintains communication with supervisors when necessary and seek assistance when needed.
  • Promptly returns contact to all messages and regularly check communication from court offices.
  • Operates department vehicles in a safe manner at all times and with due regard to duties imposed by law.
  • Maintains duty gear and other issued equipment in a safe and serviceable manner at all times and has necessary equipment when reporting for duty.
  • Maintains sound officer safety practices in dealing with suspicious persons and handling suspects/prisoners.
  • Reports unsafe conditions when observed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
